Meaning they can munch through stubborn plastics, like cling wrap and ice cream tubs, with relative ease.⁠ ⁠ In their research, the fungi was able to break down plastic in 140 days. Which the scientists involved say could be scaled up to process thousands of tonnes of plastic a year, with the mold becoming available as a waste management solution within the next five years.
