Say hello to your new friend: a plastic-eating mold that could avert the global recycling crisis within five years. Because it loves eating plastic.

Scientists at the University of Sydney discovered two types of fungi—usually found in plants and soil—are able to break down plastic at the “highest degradation rate reported in the literature that we know in the world." Meaning they can munch through stubborn plastics, like cling wrap and ice cream tubs, with relative ease.

In their research, the fungi was able to break down plastic in 140 days. Which the scientists involved say could be scaled up to process thousands of tonnes of plastic a year, with the mold becoming available as a waste management solution within the next five years. Please, mold, come and eat up all of our chucked away trash.

Needless to say, no, this does not mean we can use as much plastic we want now. "We need the behavioral issues, we need the social issues, we need the business issues, all of these need to be resolved around the plastics problem. The technology is only half the solution,” said Professor Abbas, a chemical engineer on the team. That said, along with our continued efforts to use paper straws, recycle properly and massively reduce our waste, we welcome this plastic-eating fungi to the fold.
