Hi everyone! It’s Professor @lisasolomon, mixed media artist and author of @a_field_guide_to_color and the newly released #thecolormeditationdeck from @roostbooks, with our final lesson for this week.

It’s my last day here with Sakura of America Academy and I wanted to show you something I’ve done with hundreds of students that is also in my book - A Personal Color Wheel.

Slightly different than a scientific color wheel where you mix the red/blue/yellow (the primaries) to get orange/purple/green (secondaries) and then red-orange/yellow-green/blue-purple, etc (tertiaries), in a personal color wheel you simply choose your favorite color in each category! It seems silly, but remarkably you learn a lot about your color preferences and how colors work together. In the many years that I’ve done this with students from around the world, they come out different and beautifully every time!

I tend to like to do the extended color wheel with tints (your hue/color put into white) and shades (your hue/color with a bit of black) because you then see how easy it is to shift color. You also learn if you tend to like/hate pastels or dark colors (and frankly you learn how powerful black in a tube is). Try and keep the ratios of white/black the same as you work your way around the wheel. But if you are in a rush, just do the main hues.

We each have our own sense of color and this helps to unlock your preferences. The great thing is that you can do this exercise over and over because our favorite red might be one shade today and a completely different one in 2 weeks. Plus, all the great things that a color wheel teaches us - about complementary colors (those directly across from one another) or analogous colors (those next to one another) still magically work in these personal color wheels.

Thanks for playing with #watercolor with me. I’d love to see if you use your #koiwatercolor sets to make your own personal color wheels (tag me and say hi).

To download your very own color wheel, visit the link in our bio and select Lisa Solomon from the dropdown menu!
