The work creates an alternative home to Hughes’ own “broken” reality since her parents' divorce. “I latched onto the idea of interiors because I was always trying to create some other kind of home, in a way,” Hughes told BOMB Magazine in 2013. “Whereas my space—the one that I’ve always known—has been broken.” Similarly, the captivating seaside view suggests a paradise just out of reach.
