There’s only one thing we know for sure about sustainability, and that is it’s a subjective topic. That doesn’t mean that we can all believe in our own fantasy facts that suit our own narrative, but rather that it’s attached to our own personal values.

The topic of tuna, the most eaten fish in the world, has created a lot of turmoil. Tuna are essential to the health of marine ecosystems and so are the industries and livelihoods that rely on them (unless you think that fish matter more than people, like I said, it’s about values!). When you say the words "bluefin tuna" you expect the hairs on the back of many people's necks to stand straight up. Understandably so. In many ways, this beautiful fish represents everything we humans have gotten wrong in our relationship with the ocean and seafood.

I wanted to better understand what happened, and more importantly what needs to happen . In realistic terms, not just sharing a photo saying I care - that’s called virtue signalling and we established (see my blog) that it doesn’t help!

I've said it, I'll keep saying it, proximity creates care and concern! So I called up my buddy Matt. He founded  @pescavore_seafood but is also an appointed member of the General Advisory Committee to the US Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission.

Two days of sunrise to sunset with 50-70lb limits on bluefin with @captbrandonnelson . I spent my evenings with Tanner from 3rd generation @saraspeseafoods and spearfisherman @legenderryaustin talking about what concerns fisherfolk have about the resource, and the future of resilient American fisheries.

I'm looking forward to bringing you my perspective and making these issues easier to understand. For now, as the IATTC convenes this week I urge them to continue to maintain a precautionary approach in the application of the Pacific Bluefin rebuilding plan to ensure a high probability of continued stock recovery. I'm also advocating that the tropical tuna measure be strengthened beyond the existing 72-day full fishery closure by adding additional closure days, setting bigeye catch limits, and FAD set limits.
