«The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods » is the theme for @unworldoceansday 2021, as well as a declaration of intentions that launches a decade of challenges to get the Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030.”  Fish stocks play a vital role in food security, providing nutrition and a source of income for billions of people. The livelihoods of 10-12 percent of the world’s population – that’s over 870 million people – depend on fisheries and aquaculture. And over three billion people worldwide rely on food from the ocean as a significant source of animal protein. Human societies face the enormous challenge of having to provide food, while addressing the disproportionate impacts of climate change, environmental degradation on the resource base, and issues of social importance like human rights and fair labor.

In partnership with @pescavore_seafood, I had the unique opportunity to dive into some of these issues with @fishwise Director of Business Engagement Ashley Greenley who helps us to understand their work sustaining ocean ecosystems and those that depend on them, by transforming global seafood supply chains. Founded in 2003 by graduate students in ocean science at @ucsc this NGO is empowered by science and works to accelerate sustainable seafood solutions through leadership, partnership, and collaboration.
