I adore the way your eyes smile and almost disappear when you laugh up at me. A few years ago, I was asked if I could see properly because my eyes were so small. I politely answered that I could see just fine, to which the person responded “but your eyes disappear when you smile” as if it was some kind of defect. At the time, I didn’t think much of his remarks, but lately that encounter has been flashing back in my mind, especially with the current events that have taken place against people like me. I know this sounds crazy, but I wish you looked more like your father. Not because I don’t love the way you look, but my heart aches to think you may be bullied or targeted just because your smile looks like mine. It breaks my heart to think something you got from me could put you in danger. I know the only thing I have control over is to teach you to be kind to everyone. I pray that every person you come across throughout your life finds your smile as beautiful as I think it is, and not an invitation to cause you pain.
