For my Black History Month illustration, I chose the iconic and musically talented Diana Ross. All my life I have had thick curly hair. As a child, adults would call me Diana Ross and laugh in an almost mocking way. I didn’t really understand or knew who she was, it began to make me very self-conscious of my hair. As I got older, I finally became aware of who Diana Ross was. Of course, my parents would play her music all the time when I was young, but I had no idea this whole time it was a woman with big beautiful curly hair, just like me! Being that she is known for her gorgeous hair, I decided to create this piece in ode to her performance in the 1969 GIT on Broadway song and cover of, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta my Hair.”
