I met them in 2015 while working on a personal project. Both Sarita and Bimla never had the opportunity to earn before this job as both had been married in their teens after dropping out of school because of poverty. The Indian government introduced mid day meal programme in government and government-aided schools to increase school enrolment and attendance. Another big reason was to address malnutrition. In rural India, most people are so poor that sending their children to school is not an option even if they don't have to pay a tuition fee. But a free freshly-cooked wholesome lunch for their children is a strong reason to send their children to school. With this pandemic, the closure of govt schools has disrupted the mid-day meal scheme which covers millions of children and malnutrition has risen among the most vulnerable communities.
