It’s been a significant year in the life of these incredible creatures, now existing at just 1% of their 1950’s population. With the announcement of their impending protection coming in June 2020 it is from the 1st March this year that this protection means that it will be illegal to injure or kill mountain hares. Had it not been for the enthusiasm that this image garnered when I first posted it on Instagram and Facebook then I would never have even entered it in the first place. I had effectively ‘missed’ it, glossing over its strengths and focussing instead on other images captured that day. There was however something in it that you all saw. For that I owe a massive debt of gratitude to all of the fantastically passionate people that choose to follow my work because ‘Hare ball’ has now gone on to become one of my favourite images.
