REEL by David Chancellor @chancellordavid / A wildlife veterinarian approaches an elephant cow caught in thick mud at the edge of a dam, Narupa Community Conservancy, northern Kenya - It was freed with the assistance of the community’s alert and a tractor from @loisaba_conservancy. Extremely desperate to be reunited with the herd which we flew over on our way back; so all good, and as ever extraordinary work from @kieran.avery and the team of rangers here. Without the support of the rangers and community, this would be a very different tale. Prior to the work of @nrt_kenya in this area and across Kenya, this elephant would possibly not have survived; the ivory would have been removed and fed into the illegal ivory market, the calf orphaned... When the costs are compared, and admittedly this can only be done once the network of rangers and community are established, it cost roughly 500 USD to preserve the life of this magnificent elephant, it’s calf, the herd and the positive community relationships that have been established as a result of the rescue. This dam is now a decade old and supports increasingly diverse wildlife: Grevy’s zebra, elephant, giraffe etc as well as livestock. The increased use is causing a build up of silt which is beginning to trap wildlife. The plan, once funds have been raised, is to reinstate the dam for another decade of use.
