Photo by @acacia.johnson // Nicky, an expedition guide from South Africa, prepares kayaks for a tourist excursion near the Yalour Islands, Antarctica.
For the first 6 years of my professional photography career, I worked primarily as an expedition guide aboard tourist ships in the Arctic and Antarctica. Not only was it fun, but an important way for me to spend extended time in the remote regions I otherwise never would have been able to access, and gain a much deeper understanding of their ecology, history, and future. My advice to aspiring photographers would be to think creatively about other types of work that might feed your photography practice and the things you are passionate about, at least in the beginning. For me, guiding gave me a community of brilliant and international colleagues who taught me more about Antarctica than I ever imagined I might learn.
