Photograph by @florianschulzvisuals // I photographed this Narwhal in the northeastern corner of Baffin Island at the end of winter when leads were developing in the ice. Narwhales do some of the deepest dives of any marine mammal, often reaching over a mile when they dive to the depths of the fjords. After some twenty minutes they shoot up like a torpedo at the edge of the ice, take a series of breaths, rest a bit and go again to hunt for arctic cod in the depths. I was sad to see that many animals had scars from gunshot wounds by hunters across their backs. If hunters were not using harpoons, I wondered how many animals that were shot just sank to the bottom of the sea, especially when I saw so many individuals that escaped death but carried the marks?
