クリスティーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (クリスティーズInstagram)「In 1668, France's King Louis XIV sent painter Charles Le Brun and sculptor François Girardon to the port city of Toulon to design the sculpted decoration of his104-gun Navy warship, the 'Dauphin Royal'.⠀ .⠀ As seen in these two designs — which are being offered separately — Le Brun and Girardon proposed an abundant decoration in relief and in the round. At center of the design on the ship's stern, the Dauphin (the King's eldest son) is seen seated, flanked by Neptune and possibly a river God, who offer crowns.⠀ .⠀ The sides, or 'bouteilles', of the ship show the side where the general headquarters were lodged. Following the recommendation of minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert, no effort or expense was spared to 'make shine the magnificence of His Majesty at sea'.⠀ .⠀ The drawings offered here appear to be period repetitions after the original drawings, which presumably are lost. The sculptors involved in the decoration of these ships often moved from port to port and would take with them records of the designs they had worked on. Other copies were meant for official approval, and the inscription on the sheets here may indicate they were the versions sent to Versailles for the King's approval in October 1669.⠀ .⠀ In the latter part of the 1600s, Jean-Baptiste Colbert responded to the necessity of war ships to be more agile and ordered the decoration to become lighter.
