Seventy-one percent of Black Americans live in counties in violation of air pollution standards. Although Black people comprise 13 percent of the US population, 78 percent live within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant (compared to 56 percent of Whites). Ninety one percent of the world’s population live in places where air quality levels exceed WHO limits. BIPOC communities are the first to suffer the catastrophic effects of climate change, which in turn, increases socioeconomic inequalities. The United Nations estimates that more than 120 million people could be forced into poverty in the next ten years due to the climate crisis. This is the Climate Apartheid.
