Photo by @christmannphoto // Once the emperor penguin chicks have grown enough to leave the protection of their parents' feet, they will explore the colony by themselves. Especially during the Antarctic spring, many chicks gather in creches, while both of their parents are away from the colony fishing in the rich Southern Ocean.

Oftentimes they will waddle around in the periphery of the penguin colony in small, but incredibly cute little gangs, with one chick always being the leader, while the others are following. It is a heartwarming sight in this still rather cold time of the year. If the weather deteriorates suddenly, the chicks will work together and form a small mini huddle, mimicking the behavior of their parents and learning early on, that survival in the most hostile environment on Earth is only possible via teamwork.
