I fixed a camera underneath the helicopter too, firing it with a remote release. I also fixed a camera on one of the kayaks far below, it was such a magical place I didn’t want to miss a second of it. The terrain in the picture is the surface of the Petermann Glacier in north west Greenland. The tiny kayaks negotiating the meltwater ravine are paddled by some ‘adventurous’ glaciologists towing a radar to measure the thickness and density of the ice. The experiment was conceived on the @arcticsunriseship, after we realised the glacier’s surface had too many crevasses to ski across with the radar. There were three kayaks strapped to hull of the vessel and looking around at them, someone said: “Well let’s kayak down it instead”. I remember some light engineering going on into the night to convert the radar unit to marine use, but the following day three kayaks made it successfully along the ravine. With glaciologist/ climatologist @jasonebox and @greenpeace who provided the logistics for the expedition. #arctic #adventure #adventuretime #greenland #science #glaciology #kayaking #kayakingadventures #climatechange」1月9日 10時39分 - thephotosociety
