Barry was an extraordinary writer, whose work touched many people, including me, deeply. No matter whether he wrote about remote places in the Arctic or the river in front of his home in Oregon, he articulated what nature meant to him for all of us. And he taught me to think more precisely and see more reverentially. Barry and I worked together on a story about snow geese for which I made this image. For another project titled “Ideas and Images” he wrote a piece about our collaboration from which I’d like to share this excerpt. "We are often struck by the complexity of the natural world… No scientific monograph, no one body of indigenous lore, no short story or television nature special can be definitive, let alone comprehensive about this world... For this reason wonder remains as appropriate a response as analysis. "In a lifetime of work, we have been privileged to approach corners of the world not yet overwhelmed by human designs. Our work is an interpretive response to these environments. We want to see whether, in our sophistication, we have forgotten something crucial, whether we have inadvertently dropped something along the trail. By immersing yourself in one of his evocative books like River Notes, Arctic Dreams, or Of Wolves and Men, you will contribute to his memory.
