The Georgia Senate runoffs drew firepower from the highest levels of politics on Monday with visits by President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Mike Pence, underscoring the urgency of an election to determine control of the Senate, and how easily Biden’s agenda would be realized in office.

Biden traveled to Atlanta to campaign for the Democratic Senate candidates, Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who are challenging two Republican incumbents, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler.

“We need Georgia to defend the majority,” Pence said in a midday appearance at a church in Milner. “A Republican Senate majority could be our last line of defense.”

As hundreds of millions of dollars have been pumped into Tuesday’s runoffs, Democrats in Georgia believe that an influx of new voters and a fractured Republican electorate could pave the way to victory for their candidates.

Early voting began in mid-December, and so far, more than three million people have cast their ballots — about 75% of the early votes cast in November’s general election, which set turnout records. Over 360,000 early voters in the runoffs were between the ages of 18 and 29, according to data maintained by GeorgiaVotes.com.

President Trump was scheduled to hold a rally in the northwest city of Dalton on Monday evening to support the Republican incumbents. Northwest Georgia is a crucial base of Republican support, but turnout in early voting has been disappointing in many counties there.

The president’s trip comes a day after the stunning revelation that Trump asked Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, to find 11,000-plus votes for him in order to overturn the will of the state’s electorate.
