All the while, my hips continued to keep me up at night, aching with a deep, dull pain that got sharp and unavoidable at times. I kept moving, but the Universe seemed to be sending me all the signals to slow down. A friend and team member of my expedition had a tragic accident. I returned from Mexico to the US; distraught, confused, lost. I got an MRI on my hips, learning the chronic, mounting pain I had been experiencing over the year was due to hip displaysia and shredded labrums. I learned I was on the brink of needing a hip replacement if I kept going over the next few months, so I opted for the PAO and Scope surgeries on both sides of my hip to conserve my career and to take care of the crippling pain I was experiencing. These 4 surgeries included 2 10 hour open hip surgeries in which my pelvic bone was broken in 4 places, my femur head shaved down, and my hips reconstructed. - All the while, that little thing called Covid... - I learned my love for cooking, I deepened my bond with my partner, and I was finally in one place for longer than a couple weeks, to really experience the meaning of community where I live.
