It’s been 12 weeks since getting up out of bed for the first time after my 4th hip operation this year. My reconstructive surgeries began in May and I haven’t experienced a day without pain yet. The critical nature of these surgeries didn’t really come down to a choice beyond getting a hip replacement in the next 6-12 months or not. Preserving my career or retiring. Going in to this, the light was too far out to see. Yet, now that I am just over 12 weeks out since my last surgery, and 7 months in from my first operation, I am beginning to experience previous joys of my life again. Each day I work for the baby steps, and each week I can relay some progress.

The last months have been a frustrating tug and pull of wanting to do things but being held back by my physical limitations as well as the ramifications of pushing beyond what I can challenge myself to do. My pelvic bone has been broken in four places twice, I have 6 6” screws that throb in the cold, and I’m relearning how to move my body. I’ve felt side lined. And eager. And pain. And love. And longing to be able to be ‘’myself.” But in this process I have constructed a stronger version of who that “self” is, to me, and I feel grounded in this intimate space that this year has enabled me to experience.

There’s a lot I still can’t do, like even get dressed easily. But there is a lot I can do and I am grateful for that and to focus on these points.

We all struggle. This year hasn’t been the greatest for a lot of us. But I hope that through my journey you may find some light in your own. It’s the every day effort that counts.
