It’s hard to laugh and be afraid at the same time. The sad reality is that people cough or clear their throats all the time because it’s a normal part of breathing. If you have allergies or sinus problems the way I did for much of my life, it’s just a fact of life. It’s not meant to be threatening. Mirror neurons normally make us feel concerned for someone who is coughing, which is why we say things like, “are you OK?” or we get them a glass of water. That’s empathy and human kindness. When algorithms are designed to reprogram your sense of human kindness with fear and your default response is, “Get the heck away for me, you plague carrier,” it means you’ve been hacked. Yes, the virus is real. No, you don’t want someone coughing on you (now or anytime).
