As China’s middle class has exploded, so have car ownership and vehicle traffic. In 2009 the country had 62 million registered vehicles. By 2017 the tally topped an unimaginable 300 million. Unrelenting expansion of demand for personal transport has lured American manufacturers, including Ford, which in 2017 began selling its Ford F-150 pickup truck there. To cut congestion, smog, and climate-warming emissions, China is pursuing a host of policies, with a big push to mass transit as well as electric, autonomous, and shared vehicles. But the challenge of getting to and from hundreds of cities will remain enormous.
