5 Myths about Rhythmic Gymnastics

Myth 1: Rhythmic gymnastics is easy.

It is easy to assume that because people always say "just look at the grace and elegance of the gymnasts fluttering around the carpet", "With a wave of the hand a six-meter-long ribbon drew a pattern of monograms" and "the clubs fly to the ceiling and return right into the hands of the gymnast". But in reality, behind all this it is a lot of hours of hard work giving the perception that the sport is very easy.

Myth 2: Any girl can be a gymnast.

This is not true at all. Rhythmic gymnastics is probably the only sport in which an athlete must combine the two most important qualities: strength and lightness. Predicting the future for young athletes is nearly impossible. Girls begin practicing at age 4 or 5, they will grow and mature - and each will change in her own way.

Myth 3: Gymnasts don't eat.

If they don't eat, where do they get their strength for training? Quality nutrition is vital to a Gymnast, but they keep a very close eye on how and what they eat. Of course, donuts and burgers are not part of an athlete's diet.

Myth 4: Gymnasts have no childhood.

That's not true. Everyone has a childhood, it's just that child athletes have a slightly different one. Despite the great physical exertions, a constant employment, there are also great joys such as: the first successes, the first competitions. In addition, the child forms his or her own social circle, because sports friends are forever.

Myth 5: Gymnasts always wear glitter and makeup.

This is a misconception. Rhythmic gymnasts have a clear uniform routine for training. Generally, most of the time gymnasts train in black uniforms. The colour choice is not only dictated by its utilitarian nature. Thanks to the black uniform, the coach can better see the elements performed by the athlete. And, of course, makeup is not appropriate at great physical strain.
