This very rare albino tapir, a small female less than a month old, was found lonely and weakened in the Piedade region of Atlantic rain forest, two weeks ago. Now, she is well and safe under the care of Dr. Cecilia Pessutti and her team at the Sorocaba Zoo, where I just took these photographs.Seven years ago, I made the first records of an albino tapir in the wild in Brazil through a system of remote cameras mounted in the forest of the Legado das Aguas reserve - @legadodasaguas, which is part of the largest continuous remnant of the Atlantic Forest and neighboring the rescue site of the current cub. At the time, however, the occurrence of very rare white tapirs in this region was almost a legend. Those first photographs were published worldwide with enormous positive repercussion stems from the conservation of the Atlantic Forest and triggered research coordinated by biologist Mariana Landis, from @institutomanaca. By analyzing the hundreds of images from my "studios in the woods" Mariana discovered that the photographs actually showed two albino individuals and not just one! The scientific publication with the details of our findings was published in the journal Mammalia . The challenge now is to investigate in more detail the genetic variability of the region's tapir population to understand whether the frequency of albinism may be linked to some kind of barrier to gene flow. This is a fundamental information for the conservation strategies of the largest land mammal in the Atlantic Forest. I keep working with the Manacá Institute in this history.
