This is how I got close enough to my backyard birds to get the shots in this series (White-breasted Nuthatch and Blue Jay). My blind from @tragopanblinds that I use in the wilds of Borneo or Australia when I photograph rare and elusive species works just as well in my backyard. I’m lucky enough to have woods behind my house, and I like to photograph birds on natural perches where they pause as they come to check out the feeder. I place my blind near my feeder at the edge of the woods so I can photograph the birds as they approach. Even though these suburban birds are relatively used to people, being hidden from sight allows me to get much closer and get portraits with a 400mm lens. In the cropped images, you can see the wonderful feather detail, even on your phone!
