How long has it been since you ran an internal software check?

Like any incredibly advanced form of artificial intelligence, our minds are a unique amalgamation of thoughts, memories, and physical sensations. In childhood, we develop algorithms to efficiently process these inputs so that we can form an identity and engage with the world. Without these algorithms, doing even basic things would create significant cognitive burden for us.

Unfortunately, the algorithms developed in childhood often do not serve us in adulthood. Becoming conscious of unhealthy programming is the only way to disrupt the patterns.

While thinking about our incredibly complex minds in software terms is rudimentary, I find the allegory helpful in moments of stress/overwhelm/anxiety. The terms anxiety and depression, for instance, might be helpful pathological labels for therapists, but they are rather unhelpful terms for the sufferer in that they assume permanence. I instead think of these states as temporary “bugs” in my brain. A glitchy algorithm that, with some conscious work, can be tweaked and upgraded to form new and more productive neural pathways.

If you find this framework helpful, you can regularly run the following internal software check:

1. Is this thought REALLY true?
2. Is this thought serving my long-term goals?
3. Is there another perspective that exists that might see this differently?
4. Is it possible to integrate that other perspective into my own?
5. What are three actionable steps I could take to adopt that perspective?

And just like magic, you start to develop a quiet confidence around the process of fixing these algorithms over time — and realize, no matter how deep the current pain, change is possible and presence and joy are around the corner.
