Photo by Prasenjeet Yadav @prasen.yadav / Hornbills have a unique breeding behavior. The female enters a hollow trunk of a tree and seals herself inside, leaving a small slit open for feeding. The male feeds her and the growing chicks for more than three months. The female exits the nest cavity approximately three weeks before the chicks fledge. In this image, taken in India's Western Ghats range, a male brings fruit to the female in the nest.
