Photo by @daisygilardini / The Kalahari Desert covers an area of roughly 930,000 square kilometers (360,000 square miles) in the southern African interior that links Botswana and Namibia with South African territories. During a recent trip to Africa I had the great privilege of exploring the Makgadikgadi salt pans in northeastern Botswana. The open, flat landscape covered by acacia shrubs and grassland is the ideal habitat for meerkats. These amusing creatures lead complex social lives in large communities comprised of several families. They sleep in burrows at night and leave at the first rays of sun in the morning. After warming up in the sun for a few minutes, they take off on their daily hunt. A handful of colony members serve as lookouts, watching out for predators like eagles, hawks, and jackals, while the others forage for food, which may include birds, lizards, insects, and fruit.
