They will emerge from their dens in late winter to venture onto the ice with their newborns and teach their cubs how to hunt and survive in the Arctic.  Wapusk means “white bear” in the local Cree language. Wapusk National Park, established in 1996, encompasses 11,475 square kilometers (4,430 square miles) and extends around Hudson Bay through a transitional region of boreal forest and subarctic tundra. One of the largest concentrations of the world’s remaining polar bears congregates around the small town of Churchill every fall.
