Churchill’s scotch of choice was Johnnie Walker, whose distinctive label is clearly evident on the bottle here – the perfect backdrop to the translucent effect of the glasses and jugs set on a silver tray. Churchill gifted the painting to Averell Harriman, who served as a special envoy to Europe during the early 1940s, under Roosevelt, and was then appointed Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
