Everything was bigger, icebergs and mountains towered above anything I’d known before. The tiny helicopter gives some scale to this iceberg which is approximately 11 miles long by five miles wide. I remembered it as being like an island with its own weather system. An island that would disappear slowly into the ocean. The larger pieces of ice shelf that break off from the vast ice sheet covering Antarctica are given numerical names. They are catalogued. This one is named A57a and is a remnant of a larger iceberg that broke off the Larsen C Ice Shelf in 2008.
