Photo by @francescolastrucci / Visitors hang out around Krishna's Butterball, a massive granite boulder perfectly balanced on a slippery slope in historical Mahabalipuram, in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Estimated to weigh over 250 tons, this mysterious monolith raises many unanswered questions. Though it was originally known as Vaanirai Kal, meaning in Tamil "stone of the sky god," it is now known as Krishna’s Butterball. This comes from a myth telling that butter was Krishna’s favorite food and that he would often sneak a bolus of butter from his mother’s jar. The giant boulder, which appears to be frozen mid-roll, is believed to be naturally formed, but theorists debate how corrosion could have given the rock such a shape.
