Photo by @babaktafreshi / You may have noticed the dazzling orange “star” above the east at dusk. It’s the red planet at its brightest in the Earth sky. Mars was in so-called opposition with the Earth in early October. This happens every 26 months as the two planets come closest to each other in their orbital race around the sun. If you have a telescope, use a high-power eyepiece to resolve a little orange-brown disk with a few patterns and maybe a polar cap. But even with just unaided eyes, it’s a beautiful sight to see a neighboring world so prominently. This panoramic image shows Mars opposition in 2014, rising above volcanoes and the Atacama Desert in Chile.
