There is no color as beautiful as maple leaves at the peak of fall foliage. On this October 2015 evening the full moon was rising moments after sunset above Lyman Estate, a National Historic Landmark near Boston. Known as the Vale, it’s a fine example of an 18th-19th-century country estate in the United States.

On the technical aspect, like most of my images, this is based on realistic documentary photography, where no blending of images is involved. As a personal preference I do not practice double exposure and other composite forms in my photography, and the elements of the night sky, such as the moon, are never added or relocated in my photos. It's all about timing, planning, sky quality, and the camera’s dynamic range to allow shadow and highlight recovery in post-processing. When the moon is on the right angle at the right time, there is enough light from the dusk on the opposite horizon to illuminate the foreground, while the moon is not too high to become overexposed.
