村上隆さんのインスタグラム写真 - (村上隆Instagram)「Ayako Rokkaku’s @rokkakuayako solo exhibition has opened at the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art. She is an extremely popular artist and the museum shop sold out of her merchandise on the opening day, creating a bit of frenzy. At recent auctions in Japan, her works are fetching incredibly high prices, attesting to her explosive popularity. I went to the opening of her show and, lo and behold, saw that she mentioned GEISAI, the project for discovering young artists I ran until 10 or so years ago, in her introductory wall text. For 14 years, I held GEISAI events in Tokyo, Miami, and Taipei, pouring in so much money as to endanger my company. I myself had been given a chance as a young artist when I received a grant from Asian Cultural Counsel, which allowed me to do a year-long residency on PS1’s studio visit program, with a studio in the Clock Tower Building in Manhattan’s Tribeca. Wanting to give back in some way and to support young people, I started GEISAI. Though I applied for the national grant and initially received one, I got disqualified when I accepted other sponsors. Without the money I had counted on, I almost went under, so from then on I fully funded the project myself. It was a beast of a project to manage financially. I was truly grateful that Ayako Rokkaku respectfully credited GEISAI on this happy occasion of her solo show at a museum. In 2014, I decided to discontinue GEISAI. After running it for 14 years, I felt I had poured money down the drain, as some of the participating artists had practically spat on me, figuratively speaking. But seeing GEISAI mentioned in the acknowledgement at Rokkaku’s museum show, I teared up a little, feeling as though my efforts have been worthwhile. translation: @tabi_the_fat」11月5日 7時20分 - takashipom
