Every first of November, Guatemalan residents honor their dead by making kites. This tradition is part of All Saints' Day celebrations in the town of Santiago Sumpango where residents transform their skies with colorful “Barriletes Gigantes", or “Giant Kites”.   These kites, some of which are over 40 feet in diameter, are hand painted and decorated with tissue paper and flow over the skies while flowers embellish the graves of their loved ones below. Los abuelos say that back then, the color kites represented the union of the underworld and the land of the living.   "The weavings and kites are an important cultural symbol and tie to specific ethno-linguistic Mayan identity in Guatemala, with designs depicting specific family stories, including, at times, government oppression and economic conditions", writes Michael K. Steinberg, an associate professor at the University of Albama, in a report about Guatemala's traditions.
