There was a time, believe it or not, when being called “feral” was, like, the ultimate compliment in surfing. Through the ‘90s Jack McCoy and Sonny Miller were celebrating these eccentric permanent vacationers in their movies, and then Rip Curl came out with 'Feral Kingdom’ to make the term household. But it wasn’t until the early 2000s when Timmy Turner and his HB bros started camping in Indo for months at a time — which they documented in the film 'Second Thoughts' — that the rest of us learned what it really meant to “go feral.” Turner ultimately paid a heavy price for his passion, contracting cerebral malaria. And despite the groundbreaking footage the boys scored (pre-GoPro era, mind you), not all of their journey was as pretty as the waves they scored. Even fantasy takes a toll.⁣
