A strong storm takes shape in the Gulf of Mexico by this weekend, reaffirming El Niño’s fingerprints on our weather and waves. What we mean by that is, during a normal winter, the East Coast storm track typically runs through the Great Lakes and Canada. But during stronger El Niño events, this track often shifts further south as storms form over the Southeast and Florida and then lift up the coast. That’s exactly what we’ll see this weekend. This pattern is expected to remain in place for the rest of the season, too, which could mean more south swells to come.
