I want to portray forest without depicting individual trees in their representational forms – it is challenging.” WU GUANZHONG In August 1980, Wu Guanzhong went to Leigong Mountain in Guizhou, in search of natural landscapes as painting subjects. Braving the unforgiving wilderness, he ventured into the deep mountains and primeval forest, and completed the sketch Primitive Woods of Guizhou. The process was so arduous that the artist vowed, “this would be the last time I would risk my life!” This painting was completed eight years later, in 1988 and is believed to be the only ink-and-colour work developed completely based on the composition of the sketch. With the help of his close friend Chu Teh-Chun, Wu Guanzhong held a solo exhibition in 1993 at the Cernuschi Museum in Paris, making it the museum’s fourth solo exhibition by a Chinese artist after Zhang Daqian, Lin Fengmian, and Wu Zuoren. This painting is one of the 61 paintings selected by the artist for the exhibition. As the artist’s family recalled, Wu invited Chu Teh-Chun to select a painting from the exhibition to express his deep gratitude for his friendship and support throughout the years. It was the present piece that was chosen among all.
