I have strong ancestral ties to the Dene speaking people who have called this abundantly wild and diverse place in our country home for millennia. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Fort Nelson sits on the doorstep to one of Canada’s best kept secrets - the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Encompassing nearly 12% percent of the entire land mass of British Columbia, this 6.4 million hectare tract of land is as ecologically strong as you will find today.  Laying host to some of the healthiest populations of large mammals on the continent, dozens of fully intact watersheds, nameless mountains, and little in the way of development, the Muskwa-Kechika provides the primitive essence as to how life once existed across the North American continent and specifically, the Rocky Mountain divide. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In recent years, I have joined local wilderness guide and conservationist Wayne Sawchuk on various horseback expeditions into some of the most remote regions of the Muskwa-Kechika. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Trekking through the mountains with horses is a rigorous affair. These trips certainly bring the best out of people. Participants become members of a working outfitter helping with setting up and breaking camp, cooking and cleaning, saddling and packing horses, fetching firewood and water. The days start early and they end late. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Each 14 day trip is fast paced. It requires a heightened level of fitness and awareness. Although feverish at times, once the pack-string of twenty-some horses sets out on the trail for the day, the power of the wild takes hold. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Over the course of the expedition, a deepened connection to the land, its inhabitants, and yourself is often the overriding effect of being engulfed by the enormity of such a wild and mystical place. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This type of experience has been pivotal in my understanding of all of life’s challenges.
