With so much Gulf-ward tropical activity this season, Panhandle photographer Alex Dantin has been busier than most. “We made the call to go towards the storm this trip,” he told Surfline. “We all thought Sally would be a typical, fast-moving tropical storm and do the normal, here-today-gone-tomorrow thing, but she decided to stall and fuel up with the Gulf’s bath water. We got there before sunrise, and our window of opportunity was small, with the winds forecasted to pick up to 40mph. But as the sun popped through the low-lying clouds from Sally’s front bands, all that whitewater became perfect, head-high, peeling lefts — 100-yard lines and well-overhead sets breaking out the back. Well worth battling the rapid river current and thick layers of jellies.”⁣
