MY EXERCISE “TREATMENT” // Last fall I began pushing myself to regularly exercise again, but it took awhile to regain my strength. Even 5 minutes on an elliptical left me feeling winded. But the stats are clear - regular exercise (3-5x per week) where your heart rate is up for 30 minutes decreases rates of cancer reoccurrence significantly. (Probably something to do with autophagy and the recycling of bad cells.) So, I now consider this part of my treatment plan.

During quarantine I worked my way up from 10 minute to 20 minute runs, with 3-5 minute walks in between, to keep my heart rate up for 25 minutes. I then do at least 5 minutes of strength exercises - arms + core - and end up with stretches.

To be clear, I don’t enjoy exercising. It often feels annoying and exhausting (ironic, considering I once ran cross country & half marathons in high school/college!) But then I think of what it would be like to go through chemo again... and that gets the running shoes on. After I’m done, I feel SO good, because I followed through with something that I don’t enjoy...but is good for my body.
