Where I grew up, there was a tremendous amount of activity found in the “acceptable” area of the triangle (pictured), and some activity in the unacceptable area. This exists in LA as well. It exists everywhere. I’m so sorry to all those who have been oppressed for so long. Subconscious or not, the racist attitudes undermining our society run deep. They often say it takes the death of an older generation to occur before real change is made, but we don’t have time for that. What’s happening isn’t acceptable - now or ever. It is our job to bring privilege into public awareness, acknowledge its darkness, and raise our voices that racist beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors are no longer welcome. And then? Put our money where our mouths are. Staying silent is not an option. It’s a privilege that keeps these beliefs and actions unchecked.
