Before the Mentawais got everyone all hot and bothered in the early 1990s, Nias was the ultimate Indonesian right. There wasn’t a lot of video footage of the place circulating around that time, but every magazine spread provoked fantasy after fantasy among regular-foots everywhere. Some of them even acted on that impulse, taking the four flights and five drives to their dream wave. And some of them got a rude awakening when they finally paddled out: Yeah, it’s a perfect barrel, but when it gets over six-foot, Nias will f**k you up.
