Found in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, the Florida false coral is a colorful addition to shallow water pools and rocky areas. The bottom resembles a flat disk that acts as a foot, while the opposite end is an oral disk which functions as one or more mouths. These mouths are surrounded by tentacles with cnidocytes, which are stinging cells that contain paralytic neurotoxins. These stinging tentacles help to subdue prey, but can also act as a defensive mechanism protecting the coral from enemies.
