He expressed these ideas in the form of an igloo—a transitory dwelling. Merz’s temporary shelters, despite perpetual relocation, remain constant, and he often used materials indigenous to the sites of his exhibitions. These materials reinforce the nomadic essence of his structures and their references to a humble economic system, one that is close to nature. ⠀ “Unreal City” (pictured above), a tripartite igloo, was created for the Guggenheim’s rotunda, and its fragmented outer-glass dome echoes and reflects the building’s oculus. As in all of Merz’s sculptures, this work embodies beauty and violence.
