#GuggenheimAtLarge: In the third installment of the Guggenheim Circular, we’re exploring the theme of “Home” through artworks that make people reconsider their most immediate surroundings.

“For the more fortunate, home is a haven; for many others, it is a site of conflict and pain. For some, it simply does not exist. In ‘Homeless Lamp, the Juice Sucker’ (2004-05), Iván Navarro (@huesorecords) examines survival strategies of the unsheltered by utilizing electricity and light as his main references. This work was inspired in part by 'The Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beneath New York City' (1993), a book about the hardships of living underground in the city’s subway and sewage tunnels. This luminescent, hybrid moving sculpture—part lamp, part shopping cart—alludes to the utilitarian items that people without fixed homes adapt for their nomadic existences. Scored to the Mexican revolutionary song ‘Juan sin tierra’ (John the Landless), the accompanying video follows Navarro and a friend as they search for accessible sources of electricity on New York’s streets to power the sculpture.”
