Can you spot the six-legged caterpillar🐛, winged donkey and a skeleton with a fully animated brain 🧠? - Created in 1984, the work was made at a pivotal moment in Haring’s oeuvre as he began exploring paradoxical themes – life and death; heaven and hell; good and evil; religion and sexuality – in response to the tragic onset of the AIDS crisis in New York. Just four years later, Haring himself was diagnosed with AIDS. - With its moralising tone, the canvas sits within a rich tradition of great masters grappling with themes of apocalyptic doom while also bringing in the nascent hip-hop scene of downtown New York in the 1980s. - ‘Untitled’ is currently on view in our New Bond Street Galleries as part of “Rembrandt to Richter”.
