A still life with a bang 💥

1937 was a year of great upheaval for Picasso. Spending much of his time in the idyllic tranquillity of the French countryside with his lover Marie-Thérèse Walter, his focus on still lifes reveals the artist’s desire to detach himself from the increasingly unsettling political circumstances. However, the seemingly simple composition is imbued with symbolism. Picasso had recently met the deeply enigmatic Surrealist photographer Dora Maar and the angular lines and deep colours give this work a sense of her spirited character.

Ahead of our pioneering cross-category Evening Sale on 28 July, our London galleries on New Bond Street are exhibiting 500 years of art with works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, David Hockney, Stanley Spencer, Lyonel Feininger and JMW Turner among many many more.*
