last night i couldn’t sleep. i started thinking about music and how it’s always been a way out of darkness for me. how writing songs has always been my way of unleashing demons and putting meaning to my emotions during heavy times. these are heavy times we’re living in, there’s no doubt about that. ⁣

I started thinking specifically about the music that inspired me to start Best Coast and how so much of it was by incredible Black women who had to overcome so much just for a seat at the table. I thought about how there would be no “lazy crazy baby” without The Ronettes. There would be no “60s girl groups” for me to draw inspiration from without The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Supremes, The Marvelettes - the list goes on. And while I know this song was co-written and produced by a wildly problematic white man, it really isn’t his. (Nerdy trivia for you: Ronnie Spector is the only member of The Ronettes singing on the recorded version. She even sang most of the background vocals herself! The Blossoms, led by Darlene Love provided additional background vocals.) I saw Ronnie perform this in the summertime when i was living in New York. I was 21 years old and felt so lost. When I knew I wanted to move back home and write music - it was because of artists like Ronnie Spector. It was because of Motown and Stax. There’s no Best Coast or Bethany Cosentino as a singer/songwriter without these beautiful Black voices that have inspired me so much. Need to give credit where credit is due. Here’s a 2AM cover and sorry for fucking it up there towards the end lol.⁣

I promise I will continue to do my best to fight oppression in all of its forms. I am grateful to be alive during this time in the world, it feels like a real shot at something new. A paradigm shift. A better world is possible!⁣
